Leonardo saw how friction caused by swinging bells wore away the axles that supported them. His solution: a bell support system equipped with anti-friction bearings. This system used three roller bearings to offset the weight and force of the moving bell. Two hundred years later, this design, original to Leonardo, would be referred to as the "oldest and most common system" for hanging bells. (See also Bell.)
